Jin Mao Tower

The Jin Mao Tower is a skyscraper located in Shanghai, which is located in the heart of "Chinese Manhattan", the new financial district of Pudong. The building was designed by the US architecture firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill.

Inaugurated in 1998, the 421-meter tall 88-storey tower occupies 23rd place on the list of the tallest skyscrapers in the world and the 12th tallest in China. Inside it houses a non-stop lift that takes you from the ground floor to the 88th floor, where there is a "belvedere" that offers a view of the Huangpu River and the nearby skyscrapers, in less than a minute: the observatory is free with railings and equipped with glass floor, to allow you to take a walk in the sky.

The central atrium of the tower is 32 floors high, and therefore it is possible to see, looking out over it from the "belvedere", the 56th floor where there is the lobby of a luxury hotel.

The building was designed by the American studio Skidmore, Owings & Merrill: the postmodern design draws, despite everything, from traditional Chinese architecture, in particular with regard to the rhythmic subdivision into levels, typical of pagodas. As with the Petronas Towers in Malaysia, also in the Jin Mao Tower the proportions revolve around the number 8, which in Chinese culture is a number associated with prosperity. The 88 floors are divided into 16 segments, each of which is 1/8 shorter than the base. The plant is octagonal.
