Qutb Minar

Quṭb Minār is the tallest brick minaret in the world and is located in the city of Delhi in the Southern District (Mehrauli). The building is 72.5 meters high, the diameter is 14.3 meters at the base, while it measures 2.75 meters at the top. It consists of five floors that overlook as many balconies. It is the most famous of the monuments that make up the Qutb Complex, which in 1993 was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The construction of the minaret was commissioned at the end of the 12th century by the Afghan Mamluk general Quṭb al-Dīn Aybak, the first Mamluk Sultan of Delhi, from whom it takes its name. Construction was halted on the first floor after the sultan's death. The next three plans were continued by his successor Iltutmish, also called Altamash. It was completed in 1230. In 1326 Quṭb Minār was struck by lightning. Muḥammad b. Ṭughlāq made the necessary repairs for the damage caused.
