Arnarstapi

Arnarstapi or Stapi is a small fishing village at the foot of Mt. Stapafell between the village of Hellnar and the Breiðavík farms on the southern side of Snæfellsnes, Iceland.

Once at the extreme tip of the Snaefellnes peninsula, on the southern side of the mountain we will find a small village by the sea. More than a village, they are scattered houses that take the name of two localities, Arnastapi and Hellnar.

In themselves, the two localities have no particular interests in terms of artefacts, apart from a few houses in a “photo” position and a small port. But what will strike is what the ancient lava created by colliding with the icy waters of the ocean.

The ideal route that I recommend starts from the port of Arnarstapi to move west towards Hellnes and develops on a pedestrian road for the first part and a path in the lava afterwards.

From the port, take the small road towards the south that winds near some very suggestive ancient houses and then moves away towards the coast.

A much-praised coastal walk between Arnarstapi and another village with bright houses, Hellnar, leads along a glistening gletsjer (glacier) and streams of dried lava in the strangest forms.
