The Royal Castle in Warsaw

The Royal Castle in Warsaw is the royal palace and official residence of the Polish monarchs. The king's personal office, as well as the administrative offices of the royal court of Poland were located in the palace up to the partitions of Poland. Between 1926 and the Second World War the castle was the seat of the president of Poland. It is located in the Castle Square (Plac Zamkowy), at the entrance to the old town.

In its original structure the castle dates back to the fourteenth century, built by the Dukes of Masovia and the city of Warsaw grew around it. In 1596 King Sigismund III Wasa chose it as his residence when the city of Warsaw was chosen as the capital of the kingdom. The castle was renovated between 1598 and 1619, by architects. The new structure had a polygonal shape. The eastern wing ("Saxon wing"), towards the Vistula was restructured under the reign of August III between 1740 and 1752.
