Rathaus der Stadt Wien

The Rathaus in Vienna is one of the best-known examples of neo-Gothic architecture in Central Europe. It was designed by Friedrich von Schmidt and built between 1872 and 1883 on the famous Ringstraße: the old Rathaus in the Wipplingerstraße had become insufficient for the municipality of Vienna, which had now grown considerably.

The building is distinguished by the plastic effect of the façade: behind the gothic arches the glass of the windows can be glimpsed, half hidden; the loggia between the two filigree walls thus lightens the overall effect of a building which, all in all, has considerable dimensions (153 x 127 m).

The building is surmounted by the central tower; with its 105 meters it was at the time of construction the second highest in Vienna, after that of the cathedral of Santo Stefano. On the tower is the famous statue of the Rathausmann (man of the town hall). Located near the center of the façade, the main tower protrudes forward, thus increasing the effect of depth.
