Schönbrunn palace

At the end of the seventeenth century, Emperor Leopold I commissioned the Baroque architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, trained in Rome, to build an imperial hunting castle for the heir to the throne, the future emperor Joseph I. In place of the residence of campaign built in 1642 for the empress Eleonora di Gonzaga, widow of the emperor, a grandiose representative building would have risen during the eighteenth century.

During the reign of Maria Theresa in the mid-eighteenth century, Schönbrun Palace, an imperial summer residence, became the sumptuous stage of the court. Since that time the palace has hosted the greatest European statesmen, and even with the advent of the Schönbrunn Republic it has remained the scene of political meetings at the highest levels.
