Nagy Vásárcsarnok, the Central Market in Budapest

The Central Market is the largest and oldest covered market in Budapest.

The idea of building a large covered market came from the first mayor of Budapest, Karl Kamermayer, of whom it was the largest investment.

The market is located on the Pest side, at the end of the famous Váci utca shopping street at the Liberty Bridge, and was designed and built by Samu Pecz around 1897.

The entrance gate to the market is of neo-Gothic inspiration and a distinctive architectural feature is the roof, which has been restored with colorful zsolnay tiles from Pécs.

During the World Wars the market was completely damaged and then closed for a few years until the 1990s restoration brought it back to its former glory, making it one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city today.

The market offers a great variety of stalls on three floors. Most of the stalls on the ground floor offer meats, sweets, candies, caviar, spices like paprika and wines like Tokaji.

The second floor is mainly home to restaurants, souvenir shops and a stand serving fried lángos. In the basement there is an ALDI supermarket and a fish market.
