European Schengen Center

The Schengen Area (also known as the Schengen Area or Schengen Area) is an area comprising 26 European states which, based on the Schengen acquis, have abolished checks on people at their common borders, which have been replaced by a single external border and therefore function, from the point of view of international travel, as a single country. The Schengen area is therefore a territory where the free movement of persons is guaranteed.

Speaking of Schengen, as many will remember, it is the town where the Agreement of the same name was signed in 1985, one of the most important in the history of modern Europe, which regulates the opening of borders between the signatory countries thanks to a series of rules that promote the free movement of European citizens. To find out more, you can visit the recently renovated Musée européen Schengen, which through various images and materials tells the details of this historic treatise. There are also the old caps of the customs officials of the individual states and a device that allows you to create your own Schengen passport with a lot of photos: it has no legal validity, but it is a useful and fun tool to reflect precisely on the importance of freedom. circulation between nations.

GUIDED TOUR: SCHENGEN IS ALIVE

For groups, we offer guided tours. Along with many amazing anecdotes and details, our expert guides explain the history of the Schengen Agreement and its impact on our lives today.

The country of the three borders Luxembourg, Germany and France made history. On June 14, 1985, representatives from Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Germany signed the Schengen Agreement on board the MS Princesse Marie-Astrid pleasure vessel. The agreement was an important step towards a united Europe, thanks to the abolition of border controls between the signatory countries. Schengen is the cradle of Europe without borders, which allows you to move from one country to another on foot, by bike or by car, without customs formalities.

Guided tours take place mainly outside the museum. These tours can be booked in several languages and are also possible outside normal opening hours.

For more information, refer to group programs. We will be happy to make you a personalized offer.

The museum can also be visited without a guide. It is free but only during normal opening hours. To optimize the organization, groups must announce themselves to be sure that the museum is able to welcome them.
