Elevador de Santa Justa

The elevador de Santa Justa (Italian: Santa Giusta elevator), also known as the Elevador do Carmo, is located in the city of Lisbon, Portugal. It is one of the monuments of the Baixa, the historic center of Lisbon. The ticket office is located behind the tower, in the descent of Rua do Carmo. Passengers can get on and off with the elevator, inside two elegant wooden cabins with brass details.

This neo-Gothic structure was built in the transition to the 20th century by the engineer Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, who, also in Lisbon, was responsible for the construction of the Elevador do Lavra. There is no evidence of any connection between this engineer and the French architect Gustave Eiffel. What is known is that the engineer Raul Mesnier and the French architect Louis Reynaud applied some of the techniques and materials that were already used in France in these elevators.
