Monastero dos Jerónimos

The Jerónimos Monastery is located in the Belém district in the city of Lisbon.

Made in Manueline style on a project by the architect Diogo de Boitaca, it was built by King Manuel I to celebrate the return of the Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama, after having discovered the route to India.

The monastery, together with the nearby Belém Tower and the Monument to the Discoveries, is a celebration of the most important historical period of the Portuguese nation and constitutes one of the main tourist attractions of Lisbon.

Here, on 13 December 2007, the Lisbon Treaty was signed, which reforms the Treaties on which the European Union is founded.
