Lubriano

Lubriano is an Italian town of 898 inhabitants in the province of Viterbo, located on the hills that border with Umbria.

The town of Lubriano extends over a hilly area, between the Tiber valley to the east and Lake Bolsena to the west. The altitude of its territory is between 581 and 165 m a.s.l., while the town is perched on a high tufaceous cliff at an altitude of 441 meters. The whole south side of the municipal area overlooks the Calanchi valley with high cliffs, where the flow of the Fosso di Lubriano marks the natural border with the municipality of Bagnoregio. In the central and northern part of the territory, on the other hand, a more or less undulating plateau extends, rich in cultivated fields and woods, the last south-eastern strip of the Alfina plateau.

The town stretches longitudinally on a high tufaceous promontory which extends into the valley of the badlands. The historic center linearly follows the trend of the tuff promontory on which Lubriano stands. At the center of it opens the airy Piazza San Giovanni Battista, the sitting room of Lubriano, overlooking the valley and the view of Civita di Bagnoregio as a balcony. This is overlooked by the church of San Giovanni Battista and the Monaldeschi palace (formerly Bourbon del Monte), a splendid example of local baroque. Full of charm and very characteristic are the small alleys, arches, stairways and small squares that open up in the various medieval districts, such as the Ortale (where the ancient medieval tower stands) and the Scenditoio.

Just outside the historic center is the sanctuary dedicated to the Madonna del Poggio, another delightful example of Baroque art. The alms offered to the Virgin by a large number of faithful contributed significantly to the construction of the church, as evidenced by the words Fabricaverunt peccatores reported inside above the entrance door. The sanctuary, in Baroque style, with a single nave and a single altar dedicated to the Madonna, rises on a wide staircase. Every year, on the Sunday after the Ascension. Lubriano makes public and solemn honors to the Blessed Virgin of the Poggio.

According to an ancient tradition, during the solemn mass, the lady of the party is appointed who in turn chooses two companions who will help her to perform her duties in the best possible way.
Throughout the year in which the lady serves, Our Lady keeps a picture of the sacred image at home, in front of which she burns an oil lamp and every Saturday she recites the rosary together with other faithful. It also takes care of the church and keeps the silk banner of the Madonna del Poggio that is carried by her in the main processions of the year.
