Sotoportego de la corte nova

If you find yourself near Calle Zorzi, not far from Santa Giustina, go through the Sotoportego di Corte Nova. You will notice that on the floor there is a coral pink marble stone. It is said that faith saved the inhabitants of the court several times during a plague epidemic, protecting them from death. According to tradition, during the terrible plague of 1630 all the inhabitants of Corte Nova remained immune from the contagion that instead devastated the city, causing over 50,000 deaths.

This small miracle was possible because the plague had to cross the sotoportego in an attempt to enter Corte Nova, but was blocked by a sacred image of the Virgin placed in that place. Some time earlier, a young woman named Giovanna painted a painting depicting the Virgin with San Rocco (patron saint of the plague victims), San Sebastiano and San Lorenzo Giustiniani (protectors in epidemics) and placed it in the Sotoportego, where the inhabitants of the court they met to pray together.

The plague stopped right in front of the painting, tumbling to the ground, sparing the inhabitants of the Court. At that point, among the gray trachyte slabs, we can see a stone of red Verona marble.

Over time, the entire Sotoportego was transformed into a sort of chapel, and with the entrance from the Corte Nova and the entrance from Calle Zorzi, it took on the appearance and value of a large ex-voto.

It is said that even during the First World War the inhabitants of the Sotoportego, invoking the Virgin, were spared from enemy bombing.

Even today, some consider the red stone to be a good luck charm and crush it as they pass, especially the students… try it for yourself.
