Victory Column

The Victory Column (in German Siegessäule) is one of the most famous monuments in Berlin. It is located in the center of the stellar square called "Großer Stern", inside the Tiergarten park. It was designed in 1864 by Heinrich Strack, to commemorate the victory of Prussia in the Prussian-Danish War, and inaugurated on 2 September 1873.

Unlike the original plans, a bronze sculpture of Victory 8.3 m high and 35 tons heavy was added. The sculpture, the work of Friedrich Drake, was added to celebrate Prussia's victories over Austria and France. Originally the monument was located near the Reichstag, but in 1938-39 the Nazi regime moved the monument inside the park so that it could be seen from the Brandenburg Gate.
