Palazzo Alliata di Pietratagliata

Built in 1473, Palazzo Alliata di Pietratagliata spans five centuries of Sicilian art history with its many decorative architectural layers.
The crenellated tower, the tallest in the city at the end of the 15th century, soars imperiously making the main facade embellished with mullioned and single-lancet windows unique. The beautifully preserved interior offers the best of Sicilian Rococo.

Extraordinary frescoes by Vito D' Anna created in 1760 adorn the ceilings of the halls and in the ballroom, where the painter celebrates the virtues of the Prince, a huge 18th-century Murano chandelier with 100 lights (m. 2.75 X m. 2.75), considered the largest known of its kind, serves as a precious ornament.

In the 20th century great architects such as Ernesto Basile and Vincenzo Palazzotto intervened and made this building, for its interior decorations ,one of the masterpieces of Sicilian Neo-Gothic.

Built by the Termine, a prestigious family of Catalan origin that over the centuries also became Prince of Baucina, it was sold in 1730 to the Marassi dukes of Pietratagliata.

In 1810 Cirilla Marassi di Pietratagliata married Luigi Alliata di Villafranca, bringing as dowry the palace and the title of Duke of Pietratagliata.
From that time the palace took the name "Palazzo Alliata di Pietratagliata."

The current owners Biagio Licata prince of Baucina and his wife Signoretta Alliata di Pietratagliata are direct heirs of the two families who owned and commissioned the palace.
With their marriage, one of the most extraordinary cases of housing continuity in a private historic home is realized.
