Velate Baptistery - Church of San Domenico

An eighteenth-century-looking Baptistery, but with a much older heart, permanently intended as a cultural space in Varese, the first example of the transformation of a church into a location.

The building, a construction in its own right in the center of the ancient medieval village on the slopes of the Sacro Monte di Velate, is located next to the parish church of sixteenth-century origins.

The building already appears in maps from the 1500s, but has been renovated several times, including during the 20th century. In ancient times it was the Oratory of the Confraternity of the Rosary of the Dominican fathers and dedicated to San Domenico as evidenced by the imposing altarpiece.

In 1930, the year of annexation of the Municipality of Velate to the City of Varese, the Oratory was transformed into a Baptistery at the service of the families residing in the magnificent villas of Velate. Currently the Baptistery is ideal for small exhibitions and small events in a truly suggestive experiential context of beauty.
