Mareccio Castle

South Tyrol is a land of castles and ancient manors: there are over eight hundred of them in the region, most of which are located in the Bolzano area. Among these stands Castel Mareccio, which is located near the historic center.

The oldest part of the castle dates back to the first half of the 13th century. The Lords of Mareccio, then owners of the castle, were part of the circle of the Count of Tyrol and favored its expansion in the Bolzano basin.

For some time this territory was in fact at the center of a dispute between the Tyrolean prince and the bishop of Trento.

From 1477 the Römer family had the castle enlarged and frescoed according to Renaissance models.

In the history of art Moses has often been represented as a cuckold. This depiction is based on a translation error:
when the Old Testament was translated from Hebrew - a language without vowels - into Latin, the word "horned" was used instead of the correct form "crowned".
Starting from the 16th century, the church banned this type of representations.
