Palazzo Avignonesi

Attributed to Jacopo Barozzi known as the Vignola, it was built between 1542 and 1572, has a façade in local travertine with three levels above erra, the ground floor is covered with a "cushion" ashlar with horizontal linear recourses, two magnificent lion heads are placed on either side of the central doorway above two benches also in travertine on the main floor, there are five windows with alternating triangular and semicircular gables. In the center of the elevation is placed the coat of arms of the house. Inside the palace there are rooms with 16th-century frescoes and stuccoes on the ground floor, while on the main floor 18th-century monochrome paintings of armor adorn the walls.

As a whole, this palace is distinguished by the elegance proper to an important monument of the Tuscan Renaissance, a building among the most considerable of 16th-century Polizian architecture. The cellars, which date from the 14th century, are developed in staggered levels built in round brick arches or dug into the tufa called the Sasso di Montepulciano a monolith on which the entire town stands. A cistern of large proportions and cylindrical shape is located below the Marzocco column and visible from inside the cellars through a small window.

Owned since its construction by the noble Avignonesi family (Avignonesi Della Lucilla since 1875), Palazzo Avignonesi was purchased by Cinzia Sorlini in 2017.

Palazzo Avignonesi, starting in 2020, will host elegant suites where you can stay. The Palazzo is an ideal choice for those who are looking for a travel experience in the most authentic Tuscany. Thanks to its location in the historic center of Montepulciano, travelers staying at the Palazzo will be able to conveniently plan wonderful trips to the Val d'Orcia.
