Island of Røst

Røst is a municipality in Nordland County, Norway, beyond the Arctic Circle off the southwestern tip of the Lofoten archipelago.

The municipality was established in 1928 by discovering it from the municipality of Værøy and is the smallest municipality in Norway by extension and the third smallest by number of inhabitants.

The administrative seat of the municipality is in the village of Røstlandet.

The island is known because Pietro Querini (Venice, 1400? - 1448 was an Italian merchant and navigator, senator of the Republic of Venice) made it go down in history.

From a misfortune that suffered the Venetian nobleman Pietro Querini who in 1432, following a shipwreck, found refuge in Røst. On that occasion Pietro Querini discovered how the locals kept the northern cod, called Stockfish or from the ancient Dutch stocvisch, meaning "stick fish".

The technique, which was innovative for that period, was conservation by natural drying without the use of salt which, when brought to Venice, led to the creation of the famous traditional "bacalà" recipes.

In 1932, on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the event, the inhabitants of Røst erected on the island of Sandøy, in the presence of the then Ambassador of Italy Count Alberto de Marsanich, a monument in memory of Pietro Querini and his men.

Based on the story of Querini's journey, the opera "Querini" was staged in Røst for the first time in 2012 with the participation of accredited singers in Norway accompanied by locals.

The performance was very popular nationally and internationally and kicked off the "Querinifest", an event that takes place every year on the first weekend of August.

Røst is part of the international project of the "Via Querinissima" which retraces Querini's return journey to Italy.

The aim of the project is to encourage the development of a collaboration in the sectors of tourism, the economy, environmental protection and culture.
