Beseno Castle

Beseno Castle is the largest fortified structure in Trentino-Alto Adige. Located in the municipality of Besenello, in the province of Trento, it is currently one of the seats of the museum complex of the Provincial Museum of the Buonconsiglio Castle.

Since ancient times, from the top of the hill it was possible to control the entire Vallagarina below and access to the valley that leads to Folgaria. The first certain information regarding this fortress dates back to the 12th century, when it was a fiefdom of the counts of Appiano, and inhabited by a family of their vassals: the Da Besenos. Subsequently, the history of this building became rather troubled, in fact around 1200 the Trentino church, partly through purchases and partly through donations, became the owner of a good part of the structure.

nevertheless it remained under the control of two distinct branches of the Beseno family: that of Enghelberto and that of Odolrico, but the rivalry between the two factions led to a premature decay of both Castel Beseno and Castel Pietra, over which both families boasted rights.
