Rovereto Castle - Castel Veneto - Italian Historical War Museum

Rovereto Castle, also called Castel Veneto, is a castle located in the city of Rovereto in Trentino; it is one of the best examples of late medieval Alpine fortification.

The castle, which stands on a rocky hill on the right bank of the Leno Torrent and overlooks today's Piazza Podestà, where the town hall is located, finds its origins in 14th century; it was in that century, in fact, that the Castelbarcos decided to build a garrison of their feudal power in Vallagarina.

It received its current pentagonal shape at the time of Venetian domination or in the years 1416-1509, incorporating a pre-existing fortress of the lords of Castelbarco in the 14th century. In reality, before the Castelbarcos there was the Lizzana family.

In 1796, during Napoleon Bonaparte's Italian campaign, the castle was bombed and damaged.

Since 1921 the castle has been home to the Italian Historical War Museum, which houses a vast collection of relics and artefacts from the First World War. The museum is one of the most important in Italy and attracts thousands of visitors every year.
