Gronumbergo Castle

The area in Cividale del Friuli (Udine - Italy) where the ruins of Gronumbergo Castle are currently located has always been, over the centuries, of great strategic importance for the control of the territory.

In fact, since prehistoric times, the confluence point between the Natisone river and its tributary Alberone has been occupied by the populations present in the valley as the characteristics of the area ensured notable advantages:

• Unlimited water availability.
• Exploitation of the two rivers as a means of transport and source of food.
• Visual control of both the valley towards the border and the plain.
• Possibility of requesting payment of duties for crossing the ford.
The first traces of human presence in the area date back to 8000-10000 years ago.
