Castropignano Castle

The origin of the name of Castropignano Castle is very uncertain: several scholars believe it derives from one of the settlements of the Sanniti Pentri, Castrum Expugnatum, practically razed to the ground during the wars with the Romans. Others, however, derive the name from Palombino del Sannio Pentro, also destroyed by the Romans in the year 419 BC.

The first settlements in the area of Costropignano can be traced back to the 5th-4th century. B.C. by Samnite shepherds. It was first part of the Duchy of Benevento, then of the castaldate of Boxano, assigned to the Bulgarians of Alezeco, who settled in that period in the Duchy of Benevento.

Precisely for this reason, the fiefdom became a Slavic colony, even if, over the years, the immigrants integrated perfectly with the residents without practically leaving any trace of their culture.
