Brown Castle in Portofino

The Portofino (Genoa) promontory on which Brown Castel stands has seen numerous changes throughout history.

Thanks to archaeological studies and excavations carried out in the 1950s, remains from the Roman era dating back to the century or third century AD were found. and attributable to a watchtower.

This is not surprising, given that the promontory is certainly a strategic position along the coast, which favored the evolution of the fortification.

It is believed that the construction of the actual castle, from the original Roman tower, may have taken place around the 10th century.

The Castle was under the dominion of the viscounts of Milan until 1425, when Tommaso di Fregoso occupied both the fortress and Portofino.

At the time the castle was built with a turret that served as a dwelling, a cistern and a crenellated surrounding wall.
