Monte Ursino Castle

The Monte Ursino Castle stands in a dominant position on a hill from which it takes its name, defending the historic center of Noli, in the province of Savona. Around the 10th century, many centers that stood on the coast moved to the hills, which were less unhealthy and more easily defensible.

This was also the case for Noli which, destroyed by a fire around 900, was rebuilt on the hill of Monte Ursino, overlooking the sea, and already in 1004 it was mentioned in a document and defined as a fortified village.

After the construction of a first tower on the top of the hill, the fortification was expanded and strengthened several times until it reached its current form around the 15th century, also embracing the newborn village in the plain, the current historic center, while the one in hill.

The supporters of this medieval military structure were above all the Del Carretto family, feudal lords of Noli. The castle was able to control the sea, the coast and the old Roman road passing through the hills in the town of Voze, and used until the 18th century.
