The Church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria of Egypt is a building of worship located in the historic center of Palermo (Sicily). The monumental complex is otherwise known locally as the "Church of Saint Catherine of Women", together with the fourteenth-century Dominican monastery, it occupies the area delimited to the north by the Cassaro road (today's Corso Vittorio Emanuele), to the west by Piazza Pretoria where the Fontana Pretoria of the same name, to the south with Piazza Bellini which faces the church of Santa Maria dell'Ammiraglio otherwise known as the "Martorana" and the church of San Cataldo.

With the approval of Emperor Frederick II of Swabia, the Order of preaching friars arrives in Sicily, in this case in Palermo, while San Domenico is still active and has just established the order in France in 1216 - 1220. In 1217 the first friars they were initially hosted by the Teutonic Order of the Magione founded by German religious people, therefore well seen in the eyes of the Emperor. They took refuge briefly in the former monastery of the Basilian nuns near the primitive church of San Matteo al Cassaro.
