The Church of Santa Maria del Rosario

The Church of Santa Maria del Rosario, commonly known as the Gesuati church is a religious building located in Venice. The church is part of the Chorus Venezia association.

The name Gesuati comes from the religious order, suppressed in 1668, which in the area had a church and above all a large convent, which was then purchased by the Dominicans. The Compagnia dei Poveri Gesuati was formed at the end of the 14th century and in 1432 had begun construction of the nearby church of Santa Maria della Visitazione with the then title of San Girolamo and the adjoining convent.

The church is the main seat of the large parish of the same name, which extends from Punta della Dogana to San Trovaso. The church of the Spirito Santo and the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute belong to the parish of the Gesuati as subsidiary churches.

The churches of Sant'Agnese and Santa Maria della Visitazione (also known as the Artigianelli) also fall within the territory of the parish of the Gesuati, which are autonomous convent churches managed directly by the friars who still have their own convent in the immediate vicinity.

The current building was built in the period 1726–43 on behalf of the Dominican friars, with the financial help of the whole city, still organized through the Arts and the Confraternities.
