Matera the City of Stones - Virtual Tour 360°

The city of Matera is known with the names of "City of Stones" and "Underground City", it is known for the historic Sassi districts, which make Matera one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world.

The Sassi were recognized on 9 December 1993, in the assembly of Cartagena de Indias (Colombia), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the first site in southern Italy to receive this recognition.

From 1663 to 1806 it was the capital of Basilicata in the Kingdom of Naples.

During this period the city experienced an important economic, commercial and cultural growth. Matera was the first city in southern Italy to rise up in arms against Nazi-fascism and is for this reason among the cities decorated with military valor for the war of liberation having been awarded in 1966 the Silver Medal for military valor and among the cities decorated with civil valor having been awarded the Gold Medal for civil valor in 2016.

On November 21, 1954, Civitas Mariae was proclaimed by municipal resolution. Pope John Paul II visited it on April 27, 1991 and defined it as the city of the Visitation and the Magnificat. On 17 October 2014 Matera was designated, together with Plovdiv (city located in Bulgaria), European Capital of Culture for 2019.
