Legend has it that these monks, followers of Saint Basil, played a pivotal role in welcoming the relics of Saint Vito and his tutors, Modest and Crescenza. These precious relics, accompanied by Princess Fiorenza from Salerno, are said to have arrived in Polignano in the year 801.
