Castelvecchio - Castle of San Martino in Aquaro - Virtual Tour 360°

Castelvecchio, originally called the Castle of San Martino in Aquaro, is a medieval fort located in the historic center of Verona currently used as the seat of the homonymous civic museum.

It is the most important military monument of the Scala family.

In January 1944 there was a trial against the six members of the Grand Council of Fascism who, in the session of 25 July 1943, had discouraged Benito Mussolini from the office of Prime Minister.

The Castelvecchio Museum exhibits important collections of medieval, Renaissance and modern art (up to the 18th century):

  • 29 exhibition rooms of paintings, sculptures, archaeological finds, weapons
  • works exhibited: 622

  • in specialized Cabinets: about 90,000 coins and medals, 2,650 drawings, 8,000 prints, 800 photographic plates
  • in storage: 2,500 paintings, around 500 sculptures and bronzes, around 800 furniture and decorative arts, 300 weapons and 200 ethnographic collection

In addition to the exhibition rooms, the Drawings and Prints Cabinet and the Numismatic Cabinet there are: management, administrative and technical offices, general archive, photo library, room for temporary exhibitions, catalog sales point, subsidiary craft workshops.

The restoration, which began at the end of the 1950s, saw the director Licisco Magagnato and the designer, Architect Carlo Scarpa closely collaborate both in thinking about a philological restoration of the spaces, and in choosing and placing the works that are functionally and emotionally closest to the idea of a museum as a total work of art.

Since then, the Castelvecchio Museum has become a point of reference.

The castle underwent major transformations throughout history especially when it was reduced to barracks following the transformations made by the Napoleonic troops.

The civic museum and the castle were heavily damaged after being hit by allied bombing in World War II.
