Provisions for the sale of fish in the city can be traced back to the ancient Statutes of Pesaro from the fourteenth to the seventeenth century. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the Municipality felt the need for a public building for the sale of an increasingly important product for the city economy.

The project for the construction of the fish market was approved in 1820 and entrusted to the engineer Pompeo Mancini, also author of the Giuli Gardens. The construction was carried out in the three-year period 1821 -23.

Having ceased its original function and converted into an exhibition space, since 1996 the Pescheria has been home to the Centro Arti Visive, a municipal institution whose purpose is to promote exhibitions of contemporary art and design.
