Oratory of San Pasquale Baylon - School of the Confraternity of the Sacred Stigmata


School of the Confraternity of the Sacred Stigmata under the invocation of San Pasquale Baylon and is located in the Castello district next to the church of San Francesco della Vigna.

The purpose of the Brotherhood was the application of prayers, indulgences, good works for the souls in Purgatory, to obtain from God the remission of the temporal punishment inflicted on them as a discount for sins committed during their earthly life.

Obligations of the confreres (year 1670); Daily recitation of five "Pater-Ave" in memory of the five plagues. all had to be enrolled in the "cordon of San Francesco" and always wear it. Everyone was to have participate in the processions of the Blessed Sacrament and funerals. Everyone had to have the hood, the girdle, the crown with the wooden cross, the insignia "of the stigmata on the right and of San Pasquale on the left", on the hood, in front, a "death", "flat shoes without heels, round, alla apostolica ”, barefoot or, with the permission of the superiors, shod.

Favorable opinion of the Provveditori di Comun (year 1673) about the school project, which is called "of the stigmata under the banner of San Pasquale", because it had many members and needed its own hotel to be built near the church, on the side of the cemetery , whose prospectus "concerns the nuncio's home".

School visit (1733)

In the upper room between the two stairs there is a picture with the Madonna two Saints; San Girolamo, and other works of the best school of Titian. The painting with the probatic swimming pool is by Giuseppe Zanchi. The other neighbor with Christ, who chases the merchants from the Temple and in the manner of Nicola Grassi. The one above the Banco with the resurrection of the son of the Widow is by Santo Piarti. The multiplication of bread and fish, the Canaanite, and the Centurion in three paintings are by Pietro Longhi. The others are by other modern authors. The altar table is in an uncertain manner.

Most recent events

This beautiful factory was built in the seventeenth century and was established for the benefit of the dead. It is the only one of the schools involved in the church of San Francesco that is not only preserved, but which is perhaps more flourishing than in the past.

Two other schools existed in the square of this church: that of the Sacre Stigmata and that of the name of Jesus which dispensed 16 thanks a year to as many putte, who paid money 4 to be enrolled.
