Diocesan Museum of Melfi, Bishop's Palace

The seat of the Diocesan Museum of Melfi constitutes, in the panorama of the Italian Ecclesiastical Museums, and in particular of the South, a singular and complete example of a bishop's residence of the XVIII century.

Duomo e Palazzo Vescovile

Four elements contribute to the excellent qualification of the site:

- The long and harmonious facade;
- The monumental staircase leading to the noble floor;
- The refined frescoed rooms, including the throne room, the ancient library and the Palatine chapel;
- The spectacular Italian garden, enriched by eighteenth-century marble busts.

This historical-architectural context of particular quality welcomes the exhibition sections that make up the museum. On the ground floor there are precious sacred furnishings and liturgical instruments in silver and elegant and refined liturgical vestments used by the Bishops in solemn religious functions.

On the main floor there is the art gallery consisting of paintings and sculptures ranging from the 15th to the 18th century: among the sculptural works we highlight:

- the Pietà - painted stone sculpture of the 15th century;
- painted wooden busts from the first half of the 17th century - they are reliquaries containing relics of holy martyrs from the catacomb of S. Callisto in Rome;

Among the pictorial works stand out:

- the triptych - oil on wood - the Madonna and Child with Saints Bishops by Francesco da Tolentino dated to the first half of the 16th century;
- a canvas - S. Giovanni Battista and S. Stefano - by Cristiano Danona of Anversa from the second half of the 17th century;
- the imposing canvas of the Solimenesque school - Virgin with Child between Saint Augustine, the Archangel Raphael and Tobiolo of the eighteenth century attributed to Andrea D'Aste;
- a series of 18th century canvases by the local author Nicola Federici;
- a canvas by Andrea Miglionico from the first half of the 18th century - the Crucifixion with the Madonna and Saints Rocco, Antonio and Agostino.
