National Archaeological Museum of Athens

The National Archaeological Museum of Athens is the largest archaeological museum in Greece and one of the most important museums in the world dedicated to ancient Greek art.

It was founded in the late 19th century to house and protect the antiquities of all Greece, thus showing their historical, cultural and artistic value.

The museum is housed in a typical neoclassical Athens building located in Odos 28 Oktovriou (also known as Patissìon street).

The museum was founded in 1834, when a royal decree established a central archaeological museum in the Theséion. But soon this site was insufficient, and therefore in 1866, thanks to the contributions of private citizens, a large building was built, whose construction was completed in 1880.

The initial design of the architect Ludwig Lange was subsequently modified by Ernst Ziller, Panages Kalkos and Harmodios Vlachos. The building came to need an extension, and in 1925 a new wing was built, prepared in 1939.

Due to the damage suffered by a violent earthquake in September 1999 (which had damaged the first floor) the museum was closed for restoration for a year and a half, to reopen in July 2004 on the occasion of the XXVIII Olympiad in Athens (in 2005 some exhibitions they were still closed due to ongoing interventions).

The rooms of the Minoan frescoes were opened to the public in 2005.

In May 2008 the awaited collection of Egyptian antiquities and the collection of Eleni and Antonis Stathatos were inaugurated.
