Archaeological Park of Noto Antica

The city of Noto Antica, completely destroyed in 1693, stood on Mount Alveria a few kilometers away from today's Noto. More perched, it had the characteristics of a medieval city, but not only.

A very important city then, Noto had been educated at the head of its valley, valleys that in the Arab-Norman period saw Sicily divided between Val di noto, Val di Mazara and Val di Noto precisely.

The destruction of the earthquake forever changed the fate of Noto, who after a long debate decided to change places, making tragedy an opportunity. Noto now stands a few km further down the hill on the Meti hill.

More accessible than Mount Alveria where the destroyed Noto stood instead. NUMQUAM VI CAPTA bears the engraving of the entrance: Never taken by force, the fate of this city was to never have been the source of fighting.

Noto Antica was a thriving and rich city in the past and although the earthquake of 1693 completely destroyed it, all this is still perceptible, as is evident the extraordinary force of that earthquake that destroyed the Val di Noto.
