Archaeological Area of Monte Jato

The site of the city is a mountain of m. 852 s.l.m. overlooking the valley of the river Iato. The site is naturally fortified on three sides by steep rocky walls and can only be reached from the east through a contiguous plateau.

The first nucleus dates back to the beginning of the 1st millennium and was later Hellenized during the 6th century BC. The Greek name of the city found on tiles and coins found during excavations is Iatoy. The Latin name is instead Ietas which, transformed over the centuries, in the Middle Ages becomes Giato.
