Monte Adranone

On a hill not far from Sambuca di Sicilia, the imposing ruins of a center remain, which is between the VIII and III centuries. B.C. in an area between the area of the Sican influence and the Elimo-Punic one.

The vast archaeological area extends over the terraces of the hill starting from the southern slopes where the necropolis was, with different types of tombs: hypogeic chamber tombs, including the so-called Tomb of the Queen, referable to the VI-V century phase B.C. and in the case, covered with marl blocks dating back to the IV century. B.C. In defense of the town it was erected starting from the 6th century BC a mighty city wall, which underwent several building phases linked to the history of the center: the monumental remains of the South Gate and the North Gate are highlighted, flanked by turrets. At the foot of the Acropolis was a sacred area with a rectangular building, divided into two parts: the presence of two betils reveals the belonging to the Punic religious matrix.

The site, known since the late 1800s, has been systematically investigated since the late 1960s by Prof. E. De Miro and Dr. G. Fiorentini for the Superintendency BB.CC.AA. of Agrigento.
