Sacred Area, Griso-LaBoccetta archaeological point

From an archaeological point of view, Reggio di Calabria has continued human presence in the same geographical area for at least three thousand years. The excavation activities carried out on the urban fabric have however been modest and limited over time, however the new archaeological map of the city of Reggio has recently been presented which, cataloging all the archaeological finds connected to the excavations carried out from the 16th to the 21st century, includes overall 10 groupings, 74 areas, 203 sites, almost 500 cards.

The oldest findings are traces of huts dating back to the 11th century BC, on the shores of Calopinace, and the pottery from the excavations of the port that provide us with certain information on the first inhabitants of Reggio Calabria. The most important sacred area at the moment is the one in the Griso-Laboccetta fund, located in the center of the current city between via del Torrione, via Tripepi, via 2 settembre and via Palamolla, which presumably extended up to via Aschenez.

Excavated since the end of the nineteenth century, the Griso-Laboccetta area has returned among the most famous archaeological pieces exhibited at the National Museum of Magna Grecia in Reggio. Already in the 6th century BC the presence of a very important sanctuary dedicated to Demeter in this site outside the walls is ascertained. Towards the middle of the 4th century BC the area is integrated into the new enlarged circuit of the city walls. From this moment the area is occupied by private construction until the Roman period.
