International Association of Classical Archeology

The foundation of the AIAC dates back to 1945, in the atmosphere of great animation of post-war Rome. That was an extremely favorable moment for the establishment of an organization that constituted a point of reference for the numerous foreign scholars who were in Rome during the war and for those who followed the allied troops.

To fully understand the birth of the AIAC, however, it is necessary to go back in time until 1823, when the "Circle of the Roman Hyperboreans" was founded in Rome.

The Hyperboreans were a group of four Nordic intellectuals (A. Kestner, O. Magnus von Stackelberg, E. Gerhard and Th. Panofka) who gathered to read classics and to explore the antiquities of Rome and its surroundings, in the name of a mythical people located on the edge of the inhabited world. Soon Gerhard - the true scientific force of the Hyperboreans - planned the birth of a vast international organization, which was assigned the task of overseeing the drafting of a scientific journal and the publication of unpublished monuments.
