Ducal Castle of Crecchio

The ducal castle De Riseis-D'Aragona is located in Crecchio in the province of Chieti. It currently houses the Museum of Byzantine and early medieval Abruzzo. the castle developed from a pre-existing tower called "dell'Ulivo" in the thirteenth century style and following transformations over the centuries, transformations that took place from the fifteenth century. The castle thus changed its form from defensive structure to housing architecture. The additions were divided into two stages, the first of which includes the construction of the southern loggia and the western building, while the second includes the upper loggia and the main floor of the adjacent factory. The addition of a higher level in the buildings eliminated the existing battlements. The fourth tower was destroyed in 1881 by an earthquake and was rebuilt in 1904.
