A university and archiepiscopal seat and a city with a history spanning thousands of years, it is the historical administrative center of the island having been, under the name of Caralis, capital of the province of Sardinia et Corsica during the Roman period and later capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia, from 1324 to 1720, and then from 1798 to 1814. Its port is classified as "international" because of its importance; it has commercial, industrial, tourist and passenger service functions.
Legend, told by the Latin writer Gaius Julius Solinus, has it that Caralis was founded by Aristeus, son of the god Apollo and the nymph Cyrene, who came to Sardinia from Boeotia in about the 15th century BC. Aristeus introduced hunting and agriculture to Sardinia, pacified the indigenous peoples who were fighting among themselves, and founded precisely the city of Caralis, over which he later ruled. According to some sources, Aristeus was accompanied to Sardinia by Daedalus, who, according to the ancient Greeks, was the creator of the impressive Dedalean works (the Nuraghi) on the island.
