The Synagogue of Naples is located in the Sessa palace, in the Chiaia district, in via Cappella Vecchia 31. It is an Orthodox synagogue. It was established in 1864 for the interest of Adolph Carl von Rothschild and Samuele Salomone Weil; a previous synagogue, founded in 1153 and located in the ancient Jewish quarter of Giudeca di San Marcellino, was destroyed after the umpteenth expulsion of the Jews from the Kingdom of Naples, which took place in the 18th century, by the Bourbons. They returned at the end of the 19th century, with the unification of Italy.
The current Neapolitan synagogue consists of two rectangular rooms separated by an arch. At the bottom up, is the Matroneus, because women cannot sit with men. Among the most important holidays we remember Easter and Pentecost.
Passover is one of the most important holidays for Jews, because it remembers when they regained freedom from slavery in Egypt and went to the Promised Land. Pentecost is celebrated to remember the 10 commandments that God gave to Moses on Mount Sinai.
