Island of Lampione

The islet, 200 meters long and 180 wide, has an area of about 0.036 km2 and its maximum height is 36 meters. The island is part, like Lampedusa (which is about 18 km away) of the African continental plate, as opposed to the more distant Linosa (60 km), which is still part of the Sicilian plate. The depths of the southern coast drop steeply while those on the eastern side slope gently, showing channels of white sandstone scarcely covered with vegetation. It is the island with the oldest rocks of the Pelagian archipelago, in fact it is made up of dolomitized low sea limestones, dating back to the late Eocene (42 Ma) and belonging to the Halk El Menzel Formation, widely known in some wells off the Gulf of Hammamet.

The islet is part of the Pelagie Islands marine protected area and is in zone C in the current zoning regulation of the AMP. The flora and fauna are therefore not subject to total protection and activities on the island are allowed. Many migratory birds, especially seagulls, stop here regularly. Also present is the endemic Armadillidium hirtum pelagicum, a land crustacean.
