Island of Favignana

Favignana is an island in Italy belonging to the Egadi archipelago, in Sicily. Main island of the Egadi archipelago, it is located about 7 km from the western coast of Sicily, between Trapani and Marsala, and is part of the municipality of Favignana. The name Favignana derives from the Latin favonius (favonio), a term with which the Romans indicated the falling hot wind coming from the west. The village stands around a natural inlet where the port is structured on whose banks there are the buildings of the ancient Florio tuna traps.

The traditional Mediterranean architecture of the island, characterized by white plaster and blue or green windows, are, especially in recent years, the object of rediscovery and enhancement, the landscape is in fact protected by the superintendence of cultural heritage. The island, mainly covered by Mediterranean scrub consisting of bushy shrubs and maritime pine forests, has established itself as an important tourist destination.
