Island of Levanzo

It consists of white limestone rocks which are divided into numerous caves. The Greek name of the island was Phorbantia (Φορβαντία), probably due to the abundant amount of grass (φορβή) on the island. The highest promontory is Pizzo Monaco, at 270 meters a.s.l. The vegetation is essentially composed of Brassica macrocarpa, Euphorbia dendroides, Rosmarinus officinalis and Senecio cineraria. The village is made up of a small group of houses with a small marina which is about 15 km from Trapani. It has no rolling roads, apart from a small stretch of paved road that leads to the Faraglione beach. This condition of technological backwardness explains the integrity of its scenic beauty.

On the coast there are some caves, the best known of which is the Grotta del Genovese, one of the most important archaeological sites in Italy, with its engravings and cave paintings dating back to the Upper Paleolithic (9680 BC). Furthermore, in the body of water in front of Cala Minnola, on the eastern side of the island of Levanzo, there is one of the most important submerged archaeological sites in Sicily: there is the wreck of a Roman ship and the remains of the load of amphorae and fragments of pottery lying at a depth of about 27 meters.
