Island of Ustica


The island of Ustica is located in the Tyrrhenian Sea about 67 km north-west of Palermo (Sicily) and 95 km north-west of Alicudi, but is not part of the Aeolian Islands; it occupies an area of ​​approximately 8.65 km² with a circumference of 12 km and measures 3.5 km in length and 2.5 km in width. The natural characteristic of the island is the presence of numerous caves that open along the high and steep coasts, as well as numerous rocks and shoals present all around the island; the Green cave, the Blue cave, the Pastizza cave, the Gold cave, the Colonne cave and the Doctor and Colombara rocks are worth mentioning.

On the island there is the meteorological station of Ustica, officially recognized by the World Meteorological Organization. The average annual rainfall is 505 mm, distributed on an average of 68 rainy days, with minimum in summer and maximum peak in autumn-winter. The annual average relative humidity records the value of 78.2% with a minimum of 74% in July and a maximum of 82% in January; on average there are 18 days of fog per year.
