National Museum of Italian Judaism and the Shoah

The National Museum of Italian Judaism and the Shoah (in acronym: MEIS), dedicated to the history of the Jews and the Shoah in Italy, is located in Ferrara in Via Piangipane 81, adjacent to the ancient Renaissance walls, in the section of the Rampari di St. Paul. This building, until 1992, was used as a city prison.

The Municipality of Ferrara ceded to the State, in 1906, the area on which the new city prison was later built.

The purpose was to replace the old and dilapidated headquarters, until then located in the ancient convent of San Paolo which had been adapted for that function as early as 1798. The new prison was inaugurated in 1912 and on 14 September of that year. the 104 inmates were transferred.

After the construction of the new prison in via Arginone, in 1992, the building remained in a state of neglect for a few years, until it was decided to use it again as the headquarters of the MEIS.
