The building of the ancient prisons was built in the first half of the 19th century, on a site previously occupied, as evidenced by a map dated 1761 by a coterie of blacksmiths and farriers, between via Filippini and via Falcon Vial.
The Austrian-made district prison was subsequently purchased by the Municipality of San Vito with a notarial deed in 1880.
The prisons were located in the area between the current municipal road via Falcon Vial and the one, then known as the Filippini, where some rented houses and a shop once stood, readable in the plan of the Napoleonic and Austrian Cadastre.
The building is on two levels plus one under the roof, with a rectangular plan, with a central corridor on which there are four rooms, two of which were originally intended for cells and two, smaller on the sides of the entrance, intended for the kitchen. and dining room. It maintains the layout drawn in the plan dated May 18, 1876 and the interiors are perfectly preserved.
On the back, to the north, there is a small portico that divides the space into two open-air courtyards. The upper floor is divided into four rooms, distributed laterally to the corridor, all intended for cells, plus a very small one intended for a "penalty cell". On the back, towards the north, belonging to a subsequent extension, a room for the caretaker was created.
The building of the old prisons has been restored and is intended to house the activities of the poetry house.
