Porta Metronia

Porta Metronia was one of the doors that open along the perimeter of the great Aurelian Walls of Rome.

Over time it was given various names, but they all seem (including the current one) deformations from an original Metrovia (perhaps derived from some Metrobius or Metronianus that seems to have had possessions in the area during the late empire).

A somewhat fanciful hypothesis, born by the philologists of the fourteenth century, defines it Porta Metaura, making it derive the name from meta aurum, that is the place where the gold of the taxes paid by the provinces to Rome was deposited and weighed. , before it was transferred to the state coffers.

But no element supports this hypothesis.

The only name that differs from these roots is "Porta Gabiusa", due to the fact that it was possible to reach the city of Gabii by the way that started from there (the current Via Gallia).
