Between 34 and 41 AD Giuseppe embarked to reach Italy, choosing Aquileia as one of the most decentralized Italian ports, with possible escape routes to the nearby borders of the Empire in case of need.

Arriving at the river port of Aquileia Giuseppe d'Arimatea understood that he had made the best choice for himself and for his precious cargo, customs formalities and the controls of a border port are reduced to a minimum and the city is among the largest in the Empire and the world: this allowed him a safe haven and the opportunity to create in that new environment the basis for a community that over the centuries will have the opportunity to become very influential.

Puteum aureo ("golden well" in Latin) or gold well or treasure well is a legendary well in which they would have been hidden in 452 AD all the treasures of the city of Aquileia under the Roman Empire, to avoid its capture by Attila who was advancing with his hordes.

Puteum aureo, pozzo aureo in latino, o pozzo di oro o pozzo del tesoro

There are various historical quotations and a long tradition about the possible fate of the treasure. Historically, it was never found and even today, in the contracts for the sale of land in the city of Aquileia, it is a rule to insert an entry that refers precisely to the treasure and to any retaliations of the previous owner at the time of its discovery.

The fact that similar stories are told in other cities of Roman foundation in northern Italy proves perhaps the historical inconsistency of this legend. For example, even in the city of Oderzo sacked by the Huns of Attila around 452 until the end of the Second World War, a clause, ius putei, was usually included in the land sale contracts, which provided that in the case of digging it was back to light the treasure, this would have been the right of the old owner.

Traditions and legends tell us that among the precious objects that make up this enormous treasure there is also a precious relic, the cup into which Christ drank at the Last Supper and where according to tradition his blood was collected during the crucifixion. The legends tell that the secret of its location has always been guarded by the Patriarchs of Aquileia, and it would be the origin of the enormous prestige and power of the patriarchate of Aquileia.
