Gallipoli

Gallipoli is a town on the Apulian coast. The historic center, located on an offshore island, hosts places of worship such as the Cathedral of Sant'Agata, with its richly decorated facade. Not far away, the Church of Santa Maria della Purità has a majolica floor. Although part of the Gallipoli Castle, the Torre del Rivellino is independent from the main building. On the other side of the bridge, on the mainland, is the Greek Fountain, dating back to the Renaissance.

Gallipoli is an Italian town of 20 159 inhabitants in the province of Lecce in Puglia.

The town, a bishopric since the 6th century, is located along the western coast of Salento, stretching out over the Ionian Sea, and is divided into two distinct areas: the historic center, which stands on a limestone island and has a circuit of about 1.5 km, and the new village, connected to the island by a brick bridge dating back to the seventeenth century, which began to form in 1837 on an area greater than that of the whole island. To the west of Gallipoli rise the island of Campo, the islet called "Li picciuni" and the island of Sant'Andrea which, completely flat, extends for about 50 hectares.

From the 16th century it became the main European market for the production and export of lamp oil, so much so that on the London Stock Exchange the price of the oil was established on the basis of Gallipoline quotations.

It was the district capital from 1860 to 1927; in 2015 he chaired the conference of historic cities of the Mediterranean.
